[Solved] High Sierra iMessage: An Error Showed Up During Activation

Apple products are famous for providing a hassle-free experience to their users. All Apple products are best for user experience, from Mac PCs to iPhones. However, when there are any software issues, things do not remain the same. Users often complain about different errors; the main problem is they remain unaware of why something is wrong.

We are addressing one such issue which is often reported by users for their Mac PC. Users face the activation error while logging into their messages or facetime. This issue is mainly seen with the High Sierra version of the Mac OS.

Here, we have tried to solve this issue with various methods to make your experience nice and without any complaints.  

1 – Logging out and logging in

This is one of the most obvious methods for fixing your issue. By doing this, Apple serves re-initiate the iCloud services for your Mac device. To do this, follow the given steps.

  1. Open system preferences through spotlight by pressing cmd+space on your keyboard
  2. From system preferences, select iCloud
  3. Then select sign out
  4. Restart your mac after signing out

To log in again, first, you have to log into your iCloud web account

  1. Open safari
  2. Go to icloud.com
  3. Log in to your iCloud account
  4. Go to settings
  5. Select the name of your PC
  6. Hit the cancel button
  7. Confirm the delete option
  8. Click on done

Then, you will have to log into the iCloud account on your mac

For that,

  1. Open system preferences
  2. Go to iCloud and enter your Apple id
  3. Click next
  4. Enter your mac user name and password
  5. Then, hit OK and click next
  6. Click Allow, and you will be logged in

At last, you will be able to log into your iMessage without any error. To do that,

  1. Start iMessage
  2. Enter your iCloud details
  3. Click next, done and you will be logged into your iMessages

2 – Enabling Apple Id for Messages

This is another nice way to get rid of the activation error

  1. On your mac, go to your messages, and from the top menu there, select preferences
  2. From preferences, select accounts
  3. Select iMessage from your left-hand sidebar if you see it
  4. Check the small box to enable the account
  5. If it is already checked, uncheck it, wait for a minute, and again check it
  6. Then, you can again log in to your messages

3 – Checking the Correct Date and Time Settings

Checking whether the date and time are correct has worked for several users as per the Apple community. To do this, you need to go through the following steps.

  1. Go to the Apple menu and select system preferences
  2. Select the date and time option
  3. Now verify that the date and time you are in are identical on the PC
  4. Check the box for the set date and time automatically, and you are done

4 – Resetting “NVRAM”

NVRAM is an abbreviation of Non Volatile Random Access Memory. It is a small amount of memory that your mac uses to store certain information such as sound volume, resolution, time zone, etc. So, to reset it,

  1. Shut down your mac, turn it on, and immediately press and hold these four keys – “option” + “command” + P + R
  2. Count to 30 seconds and then release those keys or hold the keys until you hear the second startup sound
  3. Once it is done, you can change your settings of NVRAM

Resetting NVRAM has helped many users to resolve the issue.

5 – Update Your PC

If you have not updated your mac, that may be the reason for your activation problem. To update your PC, you need to go through the following steps as mentioned below.

  1. Click on the apple icon on the top right corner of your screen
  2. Select the option “About this Mac”
  3. Then, click on software update
  4. Let the update download and automatically install

After updating it successfully, your issue will be resolved

6 – Checking for a Service Outage

Many times what happens is that there is a problem from the other side. So, it is always better to check whether the servers are down or anything like that before trying anything by ourselves.

To check for that, jump to Apple System Status Page and check the statuses of iMessage and facetime. After that, if you see yellow statuses, it means that the problem is from their side and they are working on it.

Hence, you don’t need to worry if this happens. 

Along with all these solutions, there are other less effective solutions also which might be helpful to you. These methods include checking any third-party networking, adjustments related to keychains, formatting the whole PC, turning off the iCloud keychain, and many more. These methods are not as helpful as the ones mentioned above and are not included in the list. Also, providing so many different solutions will confuse the user.
